No matter what your online business entails, whether it’s an affiliate marketing business or something else entirely, your main job will be to get a steady stream of visitors to your website so you can make sales. And no matter which form of traffic generation you use to get that traffic you will need to have a thorough understanding of keywords marketing.
Whether you rely on pay per click, search engine optimization, article marketing or a combination of all three, finding the best keywords (the keywords your chosen market is using to search for your product or service online) is the most important step you must learn.
If you are targeting the wrong keywords for your business you will either not get enough visitors to your site, or not get targeted visitors to your site. Either way, you won’t have the best chance of making any money.
There are a lot of theories as to what constitutes a "good" keyword and it can sometimes vary from one niche to another, but a good rule of thumb is that you want your keywords marketing to focus in only on those people who are actively searching for what you are selling (and have shown a willingness to actually buy that product or service).
Another good rule to follow when building a keyword list for your niche is to find those keywords that get a decent amount of monthly searches with minimal competition.
Now, again, "decent amount of searches" and "minimal competition" are somewhat vague. You will have to establish the parameters that work best for the niche you are marketing in.
If you are just starting out a good guide is to focus in on keywords that have at least 1,500 monthly searches but no more than 20,000 competitors.

There are many software products that you can buy that can help you out with your keyword research. Many of these programs will tell you not only how many people are using a keyword phrase they will also let you know how strong the competition is and how likely someone who is searching with that keyword is to actually make a purchase.
If you don’t have the budget for a software program at this stage in your career, you can always use the free keyword tool by Google. Since Google is one of the largest search engines you will get a very good idea of what words are being searched for online.
Remember too that using long tailed keywords (keyword phrases that have more than 3 words) is a great strategy for two reasons. One, they will have less competition and two, they will be very targeted. For example, if someone is searching for "dog training" not only is that a very competitive keyword for you to target, it is also very vague.
But, if you use the keyword "best dog training guide" you will have less competition and you know that someone is likely to buy that product when they find it.
Learning how to choose the best keywords for your
keywords marketing is a very necessary skill to learn. It may also be a skill that will take a little trial and error to perfect. Give it time and remember that keywords can be like money in the bank.
